Emerging Markets Get A New Ride (TTM)

Courtesy of Benzinga

When Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM) first unveiled its Nano mini-car, the dream of automobile ownership was within grasp of the Indian consumer. Now, Tata wants to make that dream possible for other emerging market nations as well. Executives at two parts suppliers told Dow Jones that the company may start exporting the car to Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Africa by the end of year. This rumor was recently confirmed by Tata spokesman Debasis Ray, which said that the company has started overseas shipments of the Nano.

Tata Motors sold a record 10,012 Nano cars in April and has a goal of selling at least a million units each year. The recent decision to beginning exporting the car across a variety of emerging markets could be a game changer for the company. The cars low price ($3,150 for a base model) may possibly be exactly what newly emerging middle class consumers want. Sales of the Nano should be brisk and the move will help India’s largest auto maker by reducing its dependency on its home market. It’ll be interesting to see how domestic automakers like Ford (NYSE: F) adjust their emerging market strategies in light of Tata’s news.

With shares of Tata sitting about $10 below its 52-week highs, now may be time to pounce on the Indian automaker. The potential of the Nano in places like Africa and Thailand is huge.

The jury deliberating the Raj Rajaratnam case is hearing another dozen wiretapped conversations, as the jury tries to decide whether Rajaratnam is guilty or not.

Most of the wiretaps are of Rajaratnam and Rajiv Goel, a former executive at Intel (NASDAQ: INTC).

The conversations being discussed on the tapes were an investment that Intel was making in a wireless network company to be formed by Clearwire Corp. (NASDAQ: CLWR) and Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S), as well as the acquisition of PeopleSupport Inc. by Essar Group, an Indian company.

Passport Capital’s John Burbank Tells Bloomberg He Is Betting On Commodity Decline

by Insider Zone - May 9th, 2011 12:56 pm

Courtesy of Benzinga

John Burbank of Passport Capital spoke exclusively with Bloomberg Television’s Margaret Brennan this morning. He said that he’s betting on declines in all commodities because of the end of QE2 and that gold may drop until August.

Burbank also said that unless governments inject liquidity into the market, commodities will “trend” back toward price levels seen at the start of QE2. Highlights can be found below, courtesy of Bloomberg Television. The video can be viewed here.

Burbank on if he’s exiting the gold market or just trimming holdings:

“We have hedged ourselves across all commodities, we’re invested in many different commodity equities, including energy, base materials, gold, and agriculture. We feel the repositioning of investors, looking at the end of QE2, is responsible for risk coming off. Gold is one of those things that investors bought to not be devalued against the dollar. The dollar is getting stronger against the euro. We think this is a temporary correction. Gold also typically bottoms seasonally in August. I can’t imagine it not being strong until then.”

On if this is a temporary pause:

“Unfortunately, we are having to watch the Fed and the governments around the world, whether it is China, the U.S., or Europe and then follow. It is like we’re watching the last table at the world series of poker. All of these huge players with these huge amounts of chips, and we have to play how we perceive them to be playing. I think the Fed will end QE2, then it’s going to see what happens. I risk assets sell off. I think they sell off now into it and we bottom again in commodities this summer. I think the better bet is to be cautious and just have some perspective about where things traded when QE2 started. Gold was $1350. Oil was $85. Silver was $25. I am not predicting it will go back to these levels, but the better bet, unless there is some other kind of liquidity coming from governments, is that they trend back those levels.”

On if credit will freeze up again at the end of QE2:

“No, I do not think so. Markets and credits that have been…

Bridgewater’s Views Still Gloomy on 2012

Courtesy of MarketMontage. View original post here.

Ray Dalio has created a machine at hedge fund Bridgewater – not only have assets surpassed $120B, the fund continues to churn out some fantastic results for investors.  Through end of August last year, the fund was up 25% YTD (and that was after an awful August for markets, and before the stampede upward of October); this after a 44% gain in 2010.  Longer term, ...

Markets Drop On Economic Reports, G-20 Meeting, Greece (GLD, USO, MF, SPY, QQQ)

Courtesy of John Nyaradi.

Markets dropped slightly lower today on G-20 news, mixed economic reports, and Grecian woes.

After the confusing market action on Wall Street this week, it seems that markets cannot make up their minds after last week’s euphoric rally and Euro-zone compromise.  It appeared that markets were on a meteoric rise that could have possibly carried us into Christmas, however Prime Minister Papandreou’s referendum call for Greece and MF Global’s bankruptcy soured the mood.

The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEArca:GLD) dropped half a percent today; the fall likely represents the current troubles of MF Global Holdings (NYSEArca:MF), which filed for bankruptcy earlier this week.  MF Global has ...

Dallas Fed Latest Economic Contraction Confirmation; Survey Respondents' Gloom Soars

Courtesy of ZeroHedge. View original post here.

Submitted by Tyler Durden.

The second economic disappointment of the day comes from the Dallas Fed, which dropped from -2.0 to -11.4 on expectations of -9.0- this was the 4th consecutive negative print month. The report was, in a word, horrible, with just 2 of the 15 constituent indices posting an increase, and the bulk solidly in the red, led by Unfilled and New Orders which dropped 16.8 and 11.2, respectively: not good for economic growth. On the employment side there was nothing good either, with both employment and hours worked declining by -...

Biotech Junkies Update and Momenta Pharma Moving Forward

February is now past, and the Biotech Porfolio is loaded with winners and a miss (PLX).  MRK is down a bit, but I expect that trade to recover, and one could be more agressive and double down on it, or play another round at the Jan13 $30 options for roughly the same price.  Below is the summary, and note the grey boxes are ones that did not fill.  I am still a fan of BMRN, and like DEPO as well.  Now let's look at a few others.

Table 1.  PSW Biotech Plays Since January 2011

Our newest play is Momenta Pharmaceuticals (MNTA), who is pursuing a three-part business model which includes complex generic equivalents in partnership with the Sandoz division of Novartis, proprietary compounds, and follow-on- biologics (FOB).  It seems that this company is tied up in competition/litigation wit...
