The Oxen Report: Is It Just Me or Is This Market Starting to Look Toppy?

Hey all. I will get to my introduction after the post. Today, I feel like every stock I look at is really toppy, so I am sticking with a short sale today and an Overnighter later on. Yesterday, we started our Buy Pick of the Week in Teradyne Inc. (TER). We got involved at 10.20 while the market was still down, and the stock soared to 10.65 by the end of the day. I had set an exit range for the week of 10.60 – 10.80. So, we took the profits unsure of what today had in store for a very solid one day play for 4.5%. Watch out for an Oxen Alert for an Overnight Trade to get into this afternoon for tomorrow morning.

TER is up to 10.90 this morning if you are still holding.

Short Sale of the Day: US Steel Corp. (X)

Analysis: Yesterday, I was looking for an Overnight Trade, and I pondered doing my first Overnight Short in this company. I thought this risk is way too high, but we would have been sitting cool this morning as US Steel Corp. (X) disappointed investors with a weaker than expected earnings report, especially after competitor AK Steel (AKS) had such a strong report. US Steel reported an EPS of 0.45 vs. the expected 0.63 while AK Steel reported an EPS of 0.24 vs. an expected 0.07. Further, AK Steel improved revenue by over 100%, while X only improved 20%. When not excluding one-time items, the company actually reported a loss.

The silver lining for US Steel was that they guided for a Q3 profit, and the market is looking upwards. Yet, US Steel is down 3% this morning, showing me that investors really were not thrilled with the news as nearly every other reporting company made me look like an idiot for not pulling the trigger on any of them for an Overnight Trade. That is because they all are very overvalued, in the short term, and US Steel is no different.

The company is right at the top of its upper bollinger band, and its RSI is above 60 going into today. This is a stock that has been overbought moving into earnings. X has jumped 15% in the past five sessions. US Steel is going to open pretty far down. I would expect a small pop to start the morning before this one falls on its face.

US Steel had disappointing earnings, and they were not as good as they were expected. Further, its competitor was able to completely surprise everyone…where is the discrepancy. Its in the company that saw its operating costs double year-over-year, while AKS was able to see their own operating costs controlled through smart leveraging and cost control.

Get into X early after a pop!

Entry: We are looking to enter X at 48.00 – 48.50.

Exit: We are looking to gain 2-3% and cover.

Stop Buy: 3% on top.

Good Investing,

David Ristau

wow, x flys after your post,
can you email me earlyer next time?? …lol

  2. bobhu

    Short?? I thought it was a long call… lucky that I didn’t got X.

    I am not even involved…

Oxen Alert – New Position: Shorting US Steel

    Hey all,

We are getting involved in a short sale on US Steel. The stock missed my range, so I had to pull the trigger at a lower entry of 47.45. We will be looking to exit at 46.50 – 46.05.

You can still get involved above 47, but below there I think its risky.

If you have any questions today, don’t hesitate to ask.

    Good Investing!

  5. bobhu

    David,

Sold my XRAY at 29.92 for a quick 2.8%.

    Thanks.

  6. David Ristau

    Bob -

    Congrats. You get in Teradyne?

  7. bobhu

    David,

No, it was too late when I saw your post.

    Nice call again.

  8. David Ristau

    Bob -

    You get alerts right?

  9. nicha

David- thanks for X. In at $47.20, out at $46.20. Too bad TER got away from me. Thank you.

  10. flipspiceland

    Dave,
You may want to take another look at WOR, the steel company, you played last month.   It finally moved up nearly 1.50 from last month and is likely ready for a short as well….give it some thought.

  11. bobhu

    David,

Should I get alerts? by emails or??
I only follow Phil’s post and comments, I saw your post there and get all the informations.  Did I miss anything?

    Thanks

  12. David Ristau

    Nicha -

Good job man. Yeah too bad about TER…but looks like we made the right choice yesterday. Its a definite Overnight choice if it gets to the 10.35 – 10.40 area.

    Flipspiceland -

Oh yes…it looks great for a SS. I would pick it up today and hold for a lil while. It is a slower mover, but it has topped out. The green it had today was the most it will get from the AKS earnings. I can put my recommendation behind it.

    Bobhu -

    Are you a premium member?

  13. David Ristau

    Out of X at 46.10! A solid 2.8% gain

  14. bobhu

    David,

Yes, I am…  as I read Phil and your post at real time.

Who should I ask for alert and/or other goodies?

    Thanks.

  15. David Ristau

    Bob -

If you are premium not basic member, you can alerts for free. All you need to do is go to your account in the top right hand corner. Click on that…then on the right hand side there is a box with a checklist. Check off Oxen Alerts and you will receive them in your inbox. I use them to update on positions, entry levels, exit ranges, new positions, most of the Overnight Trades I do…etc.

If you can’t click on the box then you are a basic member, and you have to buy the Alerts.

  16. nicha

X keeps falling. Nice pick David. TER down too. Lets hope it comes to our range. Would like to pick it up.

  17. jeanc

    David,
Any idea what is going on with TSL?

  18. David Ristau

    Nicha -

    Yeah sounds good.

    Jean -

Its gone up 35% in a few weeks…it sells heavy on down days because it has a lot of volatility…natural pullback.

  19. bobhu

    David,

    Done, thanks.

  20. David Ristau

Working on an Overnight Trade on Silicon Labs Inc. (SLAB)…

  21. David Ristau

If you want to get involved in SLAB I’m going to get involved in the range of 42.85 – 42.95.

  22. SaiRam

    David
    Are you in for SLAB?

  23. SaiRam

    your opinion SLAB @43.08

  24. David Ristau

Overnight Trade: Silicon Laboratories Inc. (SLAB)

We are continuing our Overnight Trade rampage with another technology company that looks poised to make a nice splash tomorrow morning.

Analysis: The semiconductor industry has been raging this Q2. Specialized, integrated circuits, and specialized semiconductors have all been performing well in this earnings season. So, if we can find a slightly undervalued semiconductor company that is slated to report earnings, we want to take advantage because it could mean a great gap up tomorrow.

One such company is Silicon Laboratories Inc. (SLAB). The company makes integrated circuits that are used in satellite television boxes, portable devices, AM/FM radios, and other consumer electronics. In the integrated and specialized semiconductor industires, since the beginning of July, fourteen out of the sixteen companies have made surprise beats. The semiconductor industry has definitely shown the first cycle of business taking off as demand starts to increase for many goods.

Silcon is set to report earnings per share at 0.64. This will be an increase from one year ago’s EPS at 0.42 of a bit over 50%. The company has had solid earnings surprises for the past year and a half and has continued to grow its income. The company in its Q1 earnings said that they were expecting revenue between $131 and $135 million. Expected EPS at 0.64 is on revenue at $133 million. Nearly every semiconductor company has surpassed revenue expectations, and if SLAB can beat revenues, they will definitely surprise.

Will Silicon be able to beat EPS and revenue? The industry would say yes, but that does not give the company any exact for sure ability to beat. One of the reasons that Silicon looks very strong to me because the company is the leader in low-cost integrated circuits, which is very appealing to many companies during economic hardships. The company continues to produce lower cost and efficient integrated circuits, which gives the company a great competitive advantage.

Finally, the company has great future prospects. The company continues to develop new lines of integrated circuits. The company is moving into touch sensitive integrated circuits that are used in mp3 players and mobile devices that people touch to select various things. The company believes the human-interfaced chip market is going to be a $1 billion market someday, and they want to be a part of it. While this won’t be in these earnings, this seems to be a company that is going places, and I suspect some strong earnings will continue to be on the way for SLAB.

The stock is fairly undervalued and has a solid 4% to the top of their bollinger band, but this is combined with a very slight overvaluation on RSI. This company can break out of the top of that band with not too much of a problem, and I suspect the company will if the earnings are right. The company is not too much overbought either, meaning we can definitely get some buyer interest if earnings are strong. The final technical I see is a thinning of the bollinger bands, which means typically a breakout to the up or downside.

    Tomorrow will predict that…

Entry: We want to get involved below 43.00.

Exit: We are looking to get out tomorrow morning after earnings.

    Stop Loss: None

    Good Investing,

    David Ristau

  25. David Ristau

I am in SLAB at 42.92.

  26. etradingsignals

David are you going LONG on SLAB?

  27. etradingsignals

Ok.. sorry.. asked the question before I hit refresh on my screen.. sorry

  28. David Ristau

    Etrading -

    Nah just an Overnight!

  29. amatta

     David
OH BOY, I got in an order by mistake of 2,000 shares of SLAB instead of 200…. I put it in at 3.58 and tried to get out but it moved down .10 before the close to 42.77. I am really hoping they are going to blow the #s away.. Won’t be sleeping at all!!

  30. bobhu

    I am in SLAB @42.78.
    Thanks, David.

  31. amatta

    COME ON SLAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. bobhu

    Good Luck..  amatta.

  33. amatta

Thanks Bob… I trust David’s reasearch, he has been on the mark on a good 8-10 so I will try not to sweat it too much…

  34. senninha

Good luck from here too.  I am in as well but a bit smaller.  Not wanting to spook you Amatta but playing earnings runs is like Vegas – they can blow the doors off earnings and still dump.  However, don’t be afraid to trade in pre-market.  No matter where it opens, in the few minutes after results it will probably swing wildly and let you out at a price you would be delighted with now.  My Ext/GTC order is in already.  Bulls make money, Bears make money, Pigs get slaughtered.  ;-)

  35. amatta

Thanks Senninha. What are you placing your shares at for the pre-market? I was able to sell 300 after hours for a 7 cent loss…

  36. David Ristau

    Amatta -

You’ll be okay bud. I like this one.

    Sennin -

My rule is out after 5 minutes with earnings. Sometimes I miss big run ups on top of gaps. Other times though, it really pays off…

    HARNESS THE GREED

  37. senninha

Amatta – I am optimistic and not looking to cut losses just yet. Speculative order @ $44 hoping it gaps through resistance at  $43.5.
Thanks David.  Maybe I am being over cautious but I am playing these trades through a miniscule account, no margin, no shorting, no daytrading and have to wait several days between each trade for funds to clear, so I am trying to be ultra disciplined.  Also in this case I didn’t like the look of yesterday’s daily candle into the close.
    - Ian.

  38. amatta

     David,
Trying to make sense of the report for SLAB it looks it beat very handily but the pre-market is killing it????
    What to do?

  39. millstone99

This is terribly ironic. I’ve been on the road and unable to take advantage of David’s hits the last few days. I finally get back in the saddle--and now this. If he’s right 8/10 times, I’m almost guaranteed to place my biggest bets on the two times he’s wrong.

  40. lapper

odd reaction on SLAB, David, what do you think of it?

  41. millstone99

According to David’s alert, their EPS were 20 cents off expectations.

  42. amatta

I am not sure the expectations are for non diluted? they came in 8 cents higher at 72 versus 64…

  43. lapper

non-gaap is what matters and they beat by .08.  Revs are in line and the only negative is that next q revs 136-141 vs 141 expected.  But the reaction is brutal.  Hate low volume small caps, they push it around any way they want and who is to say otherwise.

  44. millstone99

    ah

  45. millstone99

On average, 16 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to earn $0.64 per share. Analysts estimates typically excludes one-time items.

  46. millstone99

So are you guys going to dump or hold at the open? I’ve been burned both ways before--panic dumped, only to see it rise within the first hour, or held and watched it dropped. So sort of feel damned both ways right now.

  47. dbarakat

They earned 72 cents per share, excluding one time charges.  Revenue grew.  I don’t understand why it is getting dumped.

  48. amatta

     Mill,
I hear you… and as I mentioned to David, I made a stupid mistake and bought 2000 instead of 200 shares… Really sweating it here. It just doesn’t seem logical, there is no reason to drop 8%!

  49. millstone99

Pre-market volume is very thin though, so anything could happen at the open. My guess is it will gap down and then bargain hunters will swoop in. Just a guess. But I’m not optimistic about breaking even.

  50. bobhu

Pre market from 39 up to 40 now.  looks like a good report.  put in order 2x for 39.  Wll hold the rest.  Thoughts??

  51. millstone99

    Pre-market is getting lower, actually.

  52. millstone99

People are going to panic out of this. Don’t be one of them.

  53. amatta

Mill, but panic out of what? They beat by 8 cents and exceeded revs by a little. Guidance is still in line with expectations…

  54. millstone99

Exactly. I mean panic out of the low price this morning. The company is solid.

  55. amatta

Yea hopefully it will at the very least get back to closing price.

  56. millstone99

I’m actually more optimistic than I was earlier. No guidance from David?

  57. millstone99

Note to David: When your picks go awry, probably a good idea to show up here and help us out.

  58. amatta

     Well that is encouraging….

  59. amatta

Think we might get back to even… hanging on here!!

  60. amatta

The stock moves quite a lot daily, there are days where it has swung back and forth 10%! So I am really hopeful here we can even get beyond entry point!

  61. nicha

    Amen to that amatta.

  62. millstone99

It’s a real yo-yo this morning. Rising price action looks good tho.

  63. etradingsignals

    me out @41.6

  64. millstone99

Nice. I was going to sell at 41.66. Then got stopped out lower. Dammit.

  65. millstone99

BTW, no offense to David, but this is the last recommendation from him I’m ever going to take. I take full responsibility for my trades. It’s not his fault that I somehow managed to go hard on the few mistakes he’s made and then somehow managed to miss his greatest hits. But as we’ve seen this morning, the earnings game is a casino. You can get a great report and still get slaughtered. I’ve had my fill.

  66. amatta

If the market turns positive I think we definitely get back to even and beyond…

  67. amatta

Looks like the Amazon earnings…. the shares went all the way back, and their report really sucked! These babies are going higher!

  68. senninha

There might be another way to play these.  Based on the theory that the first move is often the wrong one – to flush out stops.  So getting in in pre-market at $38.xx and out at the open could have yielded a near 10% trade and much more safely.  Far too many examples of buy the rumour and sell the news this earnings season.

  69. nicha

Millstone- I agree with you that some of David’s picks have not been good and i have been hurt too But we all know we are gambling with earnings picks and nothing is certain about the markets. We have a choice to choose what we invest in. I would also liked to have seen David here in the morning to help us out here.
With that said you have had a lot of gripes with David yet you keep coming back?

  70. millstone99

Nicha: My subscription has yet to run out :) . Again, I’m not griping about David. Clearly he has directed us to some good trades and some good companies. But I think senninha nailed it: We’re playing them wrong. Think about it: had we held off buying yesterday and bought at the open instead of worrying about trying to sell into this madness, we’d all be laughing our asses off right now.

  71. millstone99

My mistake was setting a stop--at 41.15, b/c that was as much money as I was prepared to lose, roughly 4% from my buy-in. The stock nailed that as the low then promptly shot back up. I should have set it at 41.14.

  72. Parker

You are risking too much capital if you’re freaking out about an earnings trade.  David doesn’t know what the report is, he is making a calculated bet based on the companies past results, competitors and industry patterns coupled with where the stock is at the time.  He was right on the earnings, but that got screwed on the conservative guidance, and since stocks trade on the future and not the past, guidance will always be more important than this qtr’s results.
I bought the August 45 calls for 50 cents and they are worth maybe 10 cents this morning, 20 earlier.  But thats ok, since i knew that i was risking the entire bet and sized it accordingly.

  73. Parker

stops won’t work on earnings trades because of the gap risk.

  74. amatta

Damn it failed. Not enough buyers, should have sold at 42.2…

  75. millstone99

Not freaking out over an earnings trade, just saying there are far too many odds against you. You can get what you hoped for in the report and still get screwed no matter how much you risk. What I’m saying is, don’t buy pre-earnings. Buy after the earnings. B/c then you’re dealing with facts rather than hopes or speculations, which are the very things that fuel fear and greed.

  76. 42laurel

Davis, TER buy at this level?

  77. 42laurel

    Correction, David, buy TER?

  78. amatta

    David? Are you around…
Damn was hoping too much it seems. Still stuck with 1,700 from the 2,000. Was hoping to get back to even and the damn thing turned on a dime at 42.25… They are extremely volatile, I saw some days without any earning news that they moved up and down $3-$4… seems support is at $40?  I really appreciate your input as I am way over my head with the 1,700 shares (intention was to have 200…
    Thanks

  79. millstone99

David: As a paying customer for your service, I expect you to be available in the first hour and possibly during the last hour of the market, esp. when a trade is going down. Perhaps my expectations are awry.

  80. nicha

Maybe Phil we cud ask phil for advise on SLAB.

  81. senninha

If you are confident about the support at $40 one way of  somewhat repairing the trade might be to sell half here, then sell the Sept $40 puts and calls for $3.20 on what’s left.  Set an alert at $40 and get the hell out if it loses that on volume. After $40, next stops are $38 and $35. Best case is it limits the damage you are suffering today to about half in September, your stock is called away and that’s the end of it.  However if this weak market tanks, breaking $40 could happen real fast.
Sometimes you just have to walk away and wait for the next trade but who am I to talk?  I am still trying to work my way out of MU and BAC  ;)

  82. amatta

     Sen,
Yea I cant’ believe I didn’t take the 50 cent loss earlier. Got way too greedy trying to make it all back. It is just too much money I went in with. Do you mind asking Phil his thoughts? I have asking him way too many questions about my portfolio… I am about to give up on all this, been pegged to my computer trying to learn from Phil et al. for 3 months and I have lost $25K… now with this trade I am down another $4K…because of a novice mistake!

  83. David Ristau

Sorry boys…I should have warned you I was not going to be in this morning.

  84. nicha

Senniha- I had to walk away from BAC after waiting for a few days as it kept tanking although I had options on it which prolly crashed more than the stock. I held on to FDO and sold front month calls against it and now the stock is up and will prolly be called away for a small profit. SLAB wud have been a good exit if I had setup up a limit this morning at $42.14 for a 2% loss. I really don’t want to sell input here as I don’t want to double up on this one. Will wait for a couple of hours and see. Phil seems to think the BB report will be bad and if so then the mkt tanks more and along goes SLAB.

  85. nicha

amatta- I feel for you. I have seen your posts abt your portfolio. At least you have some answers on how to adjust it moving forward.

  86. David Ristau

If you have any questions…I am happy to answer. I understand you all are upset about the position, and I will do my best to try and help out and continue give you winning picks. My correctness…lifetime…is above 75%, but I am going to get some wrong. If you want to make money in the market, though, you have to keep trying and keep learning. I am everyday about the market, and I am learning also how to be a better writer and advisor to you all.

I apologize for not being here this morning. I let my youth get the best of me. I promise to make sure to do a better job for all of you in the responsibility category. I will do my best to make sure this does not happen again.

Thank you for believing in me so much that you accept my picks. I should never take that for granted.

  87. nicha

David- donyou recommend getting out of SLAB or hold?

  88. David Ristau

    Nicha -

I am holding for now. The fundamentals are there…give it some time.

  89. lapper

Millstone, cool it.  Just because the market does not react the way you want it to does not mean that it’s Davids fault.  He said that they would beat and they did.  You want advice on what to do with a losing trade?  Even if he gives it, he does not have a crystal ball.  How quickly you forget dozens of winning trades based on his recommends.  One goes against and the whining starts.  Can’t handle the losses?  Don’t trade.  Do you think these guys run this service for your lousy $250 a month?  Be grateful they are there cause subscription fees are a very small part of their P/L for the year.

  90. David Ristau

    Lapper -

You don’t have to get into it with Millstone. He only pipes up when he loses and never says thank you. But he is right that I should be around at key moments this morning when I was not…

  91. cslanson2

David, Are you still comfortable with getting in to  TER and XRAY at todays lower prices and before earnings ?

  92. David Ristau

    Cslan -

I just posted an Overnight Trade on TER that I am in…I wouldn’t do XRAY though.

    Check out the post!

  93. nicha

lapper – I am with you on the service these guys provide us

  94. amatta

     David,
On SLAB I sold 300 at 42.7 after hours, 600 for 40.89 a few minutes ago, so I am still holding 1,100 at a 42.84 basis. Again I made a mistake and bought 2000 instead of 200, otherwise I would have just taken the loss at 41.50 or 42 when it was there this morning (should have unloaded 1,000 there by the way). But anyways now they are 25% of my portfolio, and so I need to really consider the risks here… You think the support at 40 is going to hold and head back higher based on techicals? fundamentals it would seem to me from the release and your coverage that they are attractive (don’t know exactly how they compare to peers on valuation?)
    Thanks

  95. David Ristau

    Amatta -

They are attractive. They have a lower than industry P/E. The company has solid earnings. And really those Q2 beats were not really factored into price, which is why I thought it would rise. You got the 4% loss because of the downgrade on Q3 earnings. Now that that is factored into it…it should move back up. If the market tanks, it will follow. I am expecting pretty good earnings from other semiconductors..such as Teradyne that should boost the tech market though.

  96. amatta

What is the downgrade you are referring to? This was Q3 for the company right? So how come Q2 were not factored in?

  97. David Ristau

    Amatta -

    Not sure…because Q3 overrides.

  98. lapper

David: As a paying customer for your service, I expect you to be available at any given time, esp. when a trade is going way way way up, so I can say nice going buddy!  Perhaps my expectations are awry. HAHAHAHA
TER is 6:30 release, I am planning to be at least half way drunk by then :)
